Sticks and Stone (2019) ~12’

Written for the Yellow Barn Young Artists Program.

In its two contrasting movements, Sticks and Stone explores metallic and wooden sonorities in the percussion. The first movement being metal; the second, wood. Each of the instruments, strings, clarinet, and piano, mimic the timbre of the percussion. In the first movement, there is a feeling of peace, and yet a sense of foreboding through extremely slow an extremely slow progression of harmony and sudden interruptions. In the second movement, the contrasting characters of the first movement are elaborated on, through extended periods of time in which the instruments are in conflict with one another.
